Last weekend I learned to do welding. My birth father, Dave came with all of the stuff and showed me and my dad how to use an ARC welder. I learned how to lay a good "bead" before actually welding anything together. I made a rather weird sculpture probably fit for a garden. We had a bunch of scrap metal from one of my dad's friends who also does welding. He has an ARC welder and a gas welder. Dave spent the night with us. In the morning we had pancakes and then continued welding. I had actually made two sculptures that I ended up putting together. An ARC welder works by running electrical current through metal to a welding rod to melt it to the metal to stick it together. The rod is coated in flux, a substance used to cool it so the welding is easier. Here is a poem.
The Welder
A Poem by Isaac
Making a strange sculpture,
Welding gun in hand,
Grinder on the ground
Beside him,
In front of it
He stands
As he contemplates his sculpture,
He looks at the metal lying there,
Covered in rust,
He grinds it off,
Then,
Welder in hand,
He welds it on.
And he stands there looking again,
And he stands there thinking again.
Making a strange sculpture,
Welding gun in hand,
Grinder on the ground
Beside him,
In front of it
He stands
As he contemplates his sculpture,
He looks at the metal lying there,
Covered in rust,
He grinds it off,
Then,
Welder in hand,
He welds it on.
And he stands there looking again,
And he stands there thinking again.

Awesome poem! I can just see you standing there staring and thinking. I want to see a picture of the sculpture too.
Isaac, I am so glad that you wrote about your first welding experience. The words you chose and the photos you picked are terrific. But even those don't compare with your poem, which is excellent. You are becoming a strong writer... way to go!
Amazing blog post. My son took metal shop at the high school. He really liked it. You may want to give it a try.
Isaac,
I love your poem! I think it's great that you can articulate what you think about during the creative process.
As you know, I'm working on several car projects currently. I simply don't have enough time at the shop to get done what I need to do, so I decided to bite the bullet and beg Debby to let me buy a MIG welder for the home. And a Plasma cutter.
She said yes.
To both.
WOO-HOO!!!
When next I come over, I'll be able to show you some MIG welding and how it differs from Stick. If we can get an air source (Perhaps we can rent an air compressor on the island?) then I can show you how to write your name in metal.
Do a search for Plasma Cutter and MIG welder to get a feel of what they can do. I'll be picking the units up on Friday, and should have them set-up in the garage over the weekend, so photos will be soon.
Once your friends see what you're up to, they may even want to give it a try.
Hey Isaac, sounds like fun. I wish I could do it too but we have soccer. It sounds like you made some "modern art", ha ha. try making a house for a garden gnome. Also nice poem. You're a poet and you know it!
Awesome blog Isaac! That is so cool that you learned how to weld. I want to learn how to weld but I don't have the time or money. I really like the poem. Very, very good pictures! The one were you are lifting you mask makes you look like a olden-day knight. Very nice.
Adam
It is really cool that you got to go weld some pieces of metal together. You should sell the sculpture on ebay and say that it is so kind of garden art that cost a lot of money to make. The poem you made was really good to, you should enter one of those writing contests for kids. That picture in your post is really good to, you should enter it in the island county fair picture contest. Nice job on your blog so far!
